Climber Seriously Injured After Fall in Cumbrian Woods

15 May 2026 Climber Seriously Injured After Fall in Cumbrian Woods

Emergency services were called to Coombs Wood near Arma Thwaite after a lone climber suffered serious injuries in a fall from rocky crags deep within the woodland area.

Penrith Mountain Rescue Team was alerted to the incident at around 1.30pm on Monday, May 11, after reports that the climber had fallen and sustained severe head injuries.

According to rescuers, the injured man was fortunate to be discovered by a passing walker who immediately stayed with him and raised the alarm. Mountain rescue volunteers described the discovery as extremely fortunate given the remote nature of the location and the seriousness of the injuries.

At the time of the incident, members of Penrith Mountain Rescue Team were already involved in a separate search operation north of Carlisle. Several volunteers were redirected to Coombs Wood, where they were joined by five members of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team to assist with the complex rescue effort.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service was also deployed to the scene, with specialist medics and one of the rescue team’s doctors rapidly assessing the casualty’s condition after arrival. Due to the steep terrain and difficult access around the crags, rescuers had to rig a twin-rope hauling system to safely recover the injured climber from the rocks below.

After being secured onto a stretcher, the casualty was carefully lifted back to the top of the crag before being transferred into a rescue vehicle and then handed over to a waiting ambulance for transport to hospital.

Mountain rescue teams regularly warn that woodland crags and isolated climbing areas can become particularly hazardous, especially for solo climbers where injuries may go unnoticed for extended periods. Rescue volunteers also highlighted the importance of carrying emergency communication devices and informing others of planned routes before climbing in remote areas.

Coombs Wood, located close to the village of Arma Thwaite in Cumbria, is known among outdoor enthusiasts for its rugged landscape and natural climbing features, although the terrain can become dangerous in wet or unstable conditions.
