City footbridge shut after crack discovered in structure

27 Mar 2026 City footbridge shut after crack discovered in structure

A busy city centre footbridge in Carlisle has been closed after engineers discovered a crack in a key structural component.

The defect was identified during a routine inspection of the Irish Gate footbridge, also known as the Millennium Bridge. Officials confirmed that the crack was found in part of the steel structure supporting the bridge deck, leading to its immediate closure as a precaution.

Cumberland Council said specialist engineers will now carry out detailed investigations to assess the extent of the damage and determine what repairs are required.

Despite the closure, authorities have reassured the public that there is no danger to vehicles or pedestrians using the road below, with Castle Way remaining fully open.

No timeline has yet been given for when the bridge might reopen, with officials stressing that public safety remains the top priority while inspections continue.

The council has said further updates will be issued as more information becomes available, and has thanked residents for their patience during the disruption.
