Charities Face Financial Strain as Demand for Social Prescribing Rises

03 May 2026 Charities Face Financial Strain as Demand for Social Prescribing Rises

Charities and community organisations across north Cumbria are facing mounting financial pressure as demand for social prescribing services continues to grow.

A new report by Cumbria CVS has warned that essential support provided by voluntary and community groups could be at risk without more stable and long-term funding. Social prescribing, a system that connects people to non-medical support such as community activities and wellbeing services, is increasingly relied upon to improve health outcomes.

Much of this support is delivered by third-sector organisations, which often depend on short-term and fragmented funding. The report highlights that this approach leaves many groups struggling to maintain services, with some at risk of staff redundancies and reduced support for vulnerable individuals.

The findings stress that these organisations play a critical role in addressing issues such as isolation, poverty, mental health challenges, and long-term inequality. They also help reduce pressure on healthcare services by providing preventative, community-based care.

However, experts warn that without sustainable financial investment, these organisations may be unable to meet rising demand. The report calls for a more coordinated strategy, improved data collection, and long-term planning to protect and strengthen social prescribing services.

Leaders in the sector say the report aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by community organisations and encourage stronger collaboration to ensure continued support for those in need.
