Catchy Heading: Overnight M6 Closures to Begin Near Carlisle for Major Road Improvements

17 Feb 2026 Catchy Heading: Overnight M6 Closures to Begin Near Carlisle for Major Road Improvements

Overnight closures are set to begin on the M6 motorway near Carlisle as a section of the key north‑south route undergoes essential improvement work.
According to National Highways, work on the northbound lanes between Junction 41 (Catterlen Interchange) and Junction 42 (south Carlisle) will take place mainly overnight from 8 pm to 6 am, starting tonight with the programme due to run until April.
The improvements involve carriageway resurfacing and associated repairs, with engineers opting to carry out the majority of the work at night to reduce disruption when traffic levels are lowest. There will also be occasional daytime activity at the beginning and end of the scheme to remove and reinstate asphalt kerbing.
National Highways warned that some traffic may need to be routed over the Junction 41 roundabout during the work. Residents near the motorway have been notified that overnight working may generate some noise, and officials have apologised in advance for any disturbance.
Motorists using the M6 should allow extra time for journeys during the overnight closures and plan routes accordingly, particularly if travelling between Carlisle and destinations further south.
