Catchy Heading: Four Rescued After Car Slides Off Icy Hardknott Pass
In Cumbria’s Lake District, a routine winter journey became dangerous when a car struck a rock and slid off the icy Hardknott Pass, leaving four people in need of rescue.
The incident occurred on Friday 30 January at around 4.55 pm, when Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team were called to assist Cumbria Police after reports of the vehicle losing control on one of the pass’s steep bends.
Officials reported that the car hit a rock before sliding off the road surface. Fortunately, all four occupants were located and helped by rescue crews. They were checked on site and brought to safety with no serious injuries reported.
The rescue operation, conducted in challenging icy conditions, involved 12 team members and lasted just over three hours.
Hardknott Pass, connecting Eskdale with the Duddon Valley, is one of Britain’s most demanding mountain roads, with slopes reaching up to 30 percent gradient and sharp hairpin bends that become especially hazardous in winter.
Local authorities often advise drivers to avoid such routes during snow and ice and to use longer, safer alternatives. Rescue teams emphasized the importance of winter preparedness and caution for motorists tackling mountainous terrain in unpredictable weather.
