Carlisle United’s Promotion Hopes Ended in Play-Off Heartbreak

04 May 2026 Carlisle United’s Promotion Hopes Ended in Play-Off Heartbreak

Carlisle United’s hopes of a swift return to the Football League were shattered after a 2-1 extra-time defeat to Boreham Wood in a tense play-off semi-final at Brunton Park.

The Cumbrian side started brightly and looked capable of progressing, but the match swung in favour of the visitors during a tightly contested encounter that went beyond 90 minutes. Boreham Wood eventually found the breakthrough in extra time to seal the win and book their place at Wembley.

Carlisle had opportunities to take control during the match, including an equaliser from captain Morgan Feeney, but were unable to maintain momentum as the game wore on. A red card in extra time further complicated their chances, leaving them short-handed at a crucial stage.

Despite a spirited response and periods where they matched their opponents, Carlisle was ultimately edged out by a disciplined Boreham Wood side who proved more clinical when it mattered most.

The defeat brings an abrupt end to Carlisle’s promotion push this season, with the club now left to reflect on what might have been after falling just short of a Wembley final.
