Carlisle United Sign Toby Mullarkey On Half Season Loan From Fleetwood
Carlisle United have completed the signing of defender Toby Mullarkey on a half season loan from Fleetwood Town, adding experience and leadership to Rob Elliot's squad ahead of the new National League campaign.
The 29 year old centre back arrives at Brunton Park on a loan deal that will keep him at the club until January 2027, subject to the necessary approval from the Football Association, English Football League and National League.
Mullarkey began his career in the academies of Crewe Alexandra and Everton before establishing himself in non league football with Nantwich Town and Altrincham. His impressive performances earned him a return to the Football League with Rochdale, followed by spells at Grimsby Town, Crawley Town, and most recently Fleetwood Town.
During his career, Mullarkey has built a reputation as a composed, ball playing defender with strong aerial ability and leadership qualities. He has made more than 130 appearances for Altrincham and featured regularly in both League Two and League One, bringing valuable experience to Carlisle's back line.
Head coach Rob Elliot welcomed the signing, saying Mullarkey's physical presence, tactical awareness and willingness to learn would make him an important addition to the squad. Elliot also highlighted the defender's character, describing him as someone fully committed to the club's ambitions and the culture being built at Brunton Park.
Sporting Director Marc Tierney said Carlisle were delighted to secure the loan, noting that Mullarkey's experience at higher levels of English football, combined with his leadership and ability in possession, would strengthen the squad as the club targets promotion back to the Football League.
After completing the move, Mullarkey expressed his excitement about joining Carlisle, revealing that his previous working relationship with Rob Elliot played a significant role in his decision. He said the size of the club, its ambitions and the opportunity for regular football made the move an ideal fit.
Carlisle United will hope Mullarkey's arrival provides added defensive stability as preparations continue for the new season, with the experienced centre back expected to compete immediately for a place in the starting eleven.
