Carlisle Man Jailed for Setting Fire to His Own Flat
At Carlisle Crown Court, 61-year-old James McGlinchey of Denton Street was given a six year sentence for arson with intent to endanger life. The incident took place on 22 September last year when emergency services were called to McGlinchey’s flat following concerns for his welfare. Officers from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service were already fighting a large blaze at the property when police arrived.
McGlinchey had left the scene and was being treated by the North West Ambulance Service at a nearby address. During his arrest, he reportedly made statements accepting responsibility for the fire, including saying he could not believe he had set fire to his own home.
Temporary Detective Constable Anna Pickthall said officers found evidence that McGlinchey had purchased diesel the night before and used it to spread an accelerant around the flat before setting it alight. She added that his actions could have had deadly consequences. Fortunately, no one was injured and neighbouring flats were evacuated safely.
