Carlisle Man Admits Stabbing After Stealing Knife from Supermarket
A Carlisle man who stabbed a stranger in the city centre with a knife he had stolen from a supermarket has appeared in court and admitted the offence.
Police were called to Botchergate on the evening of January 4 after reports that a man had been stabbed outside a fast food premises. Witnesses told officers that the victim had been attacked without knowing the assailant.
The injured man told police he had been stabbed in the side and was taken to hospital for treatment before being released.
The attacker, identified as 33-year-old Marc Anthony Proudfoot of Stanhope Road, Carlisle, had earlier stolen knives and scissors from the Asda store on London Road on the same day. One of the stolen knives was later used in the stabbing, prosecutors confirmed.
Proudfoot initially left the scene after the incident but returned shortly afterwards. Officers later found a knife hidden in his sock. During police questioning, he admitted the stabbing and told officers, “I will admit it. I will do the jail time.”
In addition to pleading guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding the victim with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, Proudfoot admitted illegally possessing the knife in a public place and the earlier theft from the supermarket. He also admitted assaulting a hospital security guard in a separate incident on December 24.
At a hearing at Carlisle Crown Court, the judge ordered a pre-sentence report and assessment of Proudfoot’s dangerousness. He remains in custody and is due to be sentenced on March 20, with the judge warning that a “lengthy custodial term” is likely.
