Carl Stonehewer Set for Emotional Return at Workington Comets Clash
Former speedway favourite Carl Stonehewer is set to make a special appearance at the Workington Comets meeting on Saturday when the club faces the Oxford Cheetahs at Northside.
Stonehewer, widely regarded as one of the greatest riders in the club’s modern history, will attend the event alongside former mechanic Nick Sharples to promote their upcoming charity challenge in aid of the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund.
The pair are preparing to take part in the “Skinflint Rally” in September a three-day endurance drive from the UK to Nice in southern France via Italy using a car bought and repaired for less than £500. The challenge is designed to raise money for injured riders within the sport.
Speaking ahead of the trip, Stonehewer said Workington remains a special place for him and described the town as a “home from home.” He also expressed confidence that local supporters would help the fundraising effort through their generosity.
The former Grand Prix rider enjoyed legendary status during his years with the Workington Comets, helping the club win multiple Premier League titles and becoming one of the most recognisable names in British speedway.
