Candidates Confirmed for Barrow By-Election Ahead of June Vote

09 May 2026 Candidates Confirmed for Barrow By-Election Ahead of June Vote

Candidates standing in the forthcoming Barrow by-election have been confirmed, with the vote scheduled to take place on June 4.

The by-election was triggered after councillor Niyall Phillips resigned from his positions on Westmorland and Furness Council and Barrow Town Council to pursue a career opportunity in Australia.

The contest will determine representation for the Hawcoat and Newborns ward on Westmorland and Furness Council. Five candidates are standing: Rebekah Atkinson (Green Party), Hazel Edwards (Reform UK), Marco Fawcett (Conservative), Mike Leach (Labour), and Stephen Pickthall (Liberal Democrat).

A separate vote will also take place for the Hawcoat ward on Barrow Town Council. Candidates for this seat include Terry Assouad (Labour), Hazel Edwards (Reform UK), and Marco Fawcett (Conservative).

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on election day. Residents are required to be registered to vote and must present valid photo identification under current electoral rules.

Authorities have reminded voters of key deadlines, including registration and applications for postal or proxy voting, as preparations continue for the local poll.

The by-election is expected to draw attention locally as parties compete to secure representation in the area following the vacancy.
