BT Fined £5,000 After Unsafe Roadworks Incident in Cumbria

29 Apr 2026 BT Fined £5,000 After Unsafe Roadworks Incident in Cumbria

Telecommunications company BT has been fined £5,000 after pleading guilty to offences linked to unsafe roadworks carried out in Cumbria.

The case was brought by Westmorland and Furness Council and heard at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court. It related to street works that were found to be unsafe due to inadequate safety measures, including poor signage, lighting, and traffic management at the site.

Inspectors discovered that the works posed a risk to both pedestrians and road users, leading to enforcement action under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991. Following the inspection, operatives were instructed to stop work immediately until proper safety standards were met.

In addition to the fine, BT was ordered to pay court costs and a victim surcharge, bringing the total financial penalty significantly higher.

Council officials said the case underlines the importance of strict compliance with safety regulations when utility companies carry out work on public roads. They stressed that even temporary works must be properly managed to avoid putting the public at risk.

The incident forms part of ongoing enforcement activity by local authorities to ensure utility companies maintain safe working practices across the region.
