Brampton Residents Celebrate As Housing Developer Pauses Sale Of Community Land
Residents in Brampton have welcomed a decision by Persimmon Homes Lancashire to pause the proposed sale of a parcel of land next to Town Foot Park, following strong objections from the local community.
The site, which was advertised for £60,000, has long been used by local families as an open recreational area and children's play space. Residents argue that a legal agreement dating back to 1990 intended for the land to remain available for community use, although they claim the agreement was never fully implemented after the original developer went into liquidation.
Local campaigners, including retired solicitor Simon Henderson, have been working alongside Carlisle MP Julie Minns to prevent the sale. They have also asked the parish council to seek protection for the land under the Localism Act, which could provide the community with greater involvement if any future sale is proposed.
Residents say the land has served the community for decades, providing access to public footpaths, space for children to play, and a green area used daily by walkers and dog owners. They also believe the site is unsuitable for housing development because of nearby Brampton Beck and existing public rights of way that cross the land.
In response to community concerns, Persimmon Homes Lancashire confirmed it has paused the current marketing process while carrying out a further review of the site. The developer said it understands the importance of the land to local residents and wants to work constructively with the community to determine the best way forward.
Campaigners hope the pause will lead to a permanent solution that secures the land for public use rather than private development. They continue to call for ownership of the site to be transferred to Cumberland Council or another local authority, ensuring it remains a protected green space for the people of Brampton for years to come.
