Bournemouth Lead Premier League Charge In Europa League As Sunderland And Palace Chase Knockout Places
Bournemouth are flying in the Europa League, with Sunderland and Crystal Palace also battling to secure places in the knockout rounds.
The latest league-phase standings, updated after the fourth round of matches on November 5, show Bournemouth in second place with 12 points from four wins. Benfica lead the 36-team table on goal difference, while Ferencváros are third, also with a perfect record. Bournemouth’s strong start has put the Premier League club in an excellent position to challenge for direct qualification to the last 16.
Sunderland are the next-highest English side in 11th place, with seven points from four matches. Their record stands at two wins, one draw and one defeat, leaving them level on points with several clubs around them. Their goal difference currently places them outside the top eight, but within the group of teams positioned to qualify for the knockout play-offs.
Crystal Palace are 21st with five points after one win, two draws and one defeat. Their campaign has been more uneven, but they remain inside the top 24, which would be enough to secure a place in the two-legged play-off round. Palace will need to improve their results in the remaining fixtures if they are to climb towards the automatic qualification places.
Bournemouth strengthened their position with a 3-1 away victory against Sparta Prague on November 5. The home side took the lead before Tyler Adams, Evanilson and Rayan scored after the break to complete the comeback. The result gave Bournemouth a fourth consecutive league-phase victory and maintained their place among the leading contenders.
Their earlier victories came against Real Sociedad, Sturm Graz and AC Milan. Bournemouth began with a 2-1 win away to Real Sociedad, followed by a 3-0 home victory over Sturm Graz and another 3-0 success against AC Milan. The four wins have produced 12 points and a goal difference of plus nine, putting them just behind Benfica.
Sunderland’s fourth fixture brought a setback, as they lost 2-0 at home to Dinamo Zagreb on November 5. That followed victories against AZ Alkmaar and Torreense, as well as a draw away to Lech Poznan. The defeat leaves Sunderland with seven points, but their position in 11th means they remain in a competitive position as the league phase enters its second half.
Palace drew 1-1 with Hoffenheim in their latest match. Their campaign began with a 4-0 victory over Lech Poznan, but they subsequently lost 3-2 away to Lyon and drew 2-2 against Besiktas. The draw against Hoffenheim added another point, taking their total to five and keeping them inside the top 24.
The competition uses a single league table featuring 36 clubs, replacing the traditional group-stage format. Each team plays eight matches against different opponents, with four at home and four away. Results are combined in one standings table, making every point and goal difference important as teams compete for places in the next stage.
The top eight teams at the end of the league phase will qualify automatically for the last 16. Clubs finishing between ninth and 24th will enter two-legged play-offs to decide the remaining eight places. Teams ending the league phase in positions 25 to 36 will be eliminated from European competition for the season.
Bournemouth’s immediate challenge is an away fixture against Celta Vigo on November 26, followed by a home match against Viktoria Plzen on December 10. They are then scheduled to travel to Lillestrom on January 21 before hosting Hapoel Be’er Sheva on January 28. Maintaining their winning run could give the club a strong chance of finishing in the top eight.
Sunderland return to action on November 26 with a home match against Jagiellonia Bialystok. Their remaining fixtures include an away trip to AC Milan on December 10, a visit to Anderlecht on January 21 and a home meeting with Levski Sofia on January 28. Those matches will be important in determining whether they can move closer to the automatic qualification places.
Crystal Palace are due to host Real Sociedad on November 26 before travelling to Jagiellonia Bialystok on December 10. Their final two league-phase matches are against Sparta Prague at home on January 21 and Red Bull Salzburg away on January 28. Palace will be looking to turn their remaining fixtures into enough points to secure progression.
The standings also underline the strength of competition from clubs across Europe. Juventus, Olympiacos and Bayer Leverkusen are among the teams occupying the upper positions, while traditional European names including AC Milan, Marseille and Celtic are currently lower down the table. With four matches remaining for every club, there is still time for significant changes in the standings.
For the English sides, Bournemouth are currently best placed to reach the last 16 without needing a play-off. Sunderland are within the play-off positions, while Palace will need to protect their place in the top 24. The next round of fixtures on November 26 will provide another important indication of how their European campaigns are developing.
