Bournemouth Lead English Challenge In Europa League As Crystal Palace And Sunderland Battle For Position
Bournemouth have made an impressive start to their 2026/27 UEFA Europa League campaign, while Crystal Palace and Sunderland continue their efforts to secure places in the knockout stages of the competition.
The three English clubs entered the tournament with different ambitions, but all have the opportunity to make an impact in Europe's second-tier club competition. Bournemouth have emerged as one of the early pace-setters, winning their opening four matches and collecting maximum points. Sunderland have also recorded important victories, although their latest defeat has interrupted their progress. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, are looking to build consistency after a mixed series of results.
The 2026/27 Europa League features 36 clubs competing in a single league phase, replacing the traditional group-stage format. Each team plays eight different opponents, with four matches at home and four away. The new structure means clubs must maintain their performance across several months rather than relying on a small number of group fixtures. Results are combined into one overall league table, with points, goal difference and goals scored helping determine the final positions.
Bournemouth's latest result came away against Sparta Prague on 5 November, where they secured a 3-1 victory. The result followed an already strong sequence of performances, including wins against Real Sociedad, Sturm Graz and AC Milan. Their victory over the Czech side extended their winning run to four matches and demonstrated their ability to compete against established European opposition. With 12 points from four games, Bournemouth have put themselves in a strong position to challenge for direct qualification to the last 16.
The Cherries began their European campaign with a 2-1 away victory against Real Sociedad on 17 September. They subsequently defeated Sturm Graz 3-0 before producing another convincing performance against AC Milan, winning by the same scoreline on 22 October. Those results gave the south coast club considerable momentum ahead of their trip to Prague. Their latest victory means they have continued their perfect record despite facing opponents from different domestic leagues and footballing backgrounds.
Sunderland have experienced a more complicated campaign. The Wearside club started with a 1-0 home victory against AZ Alkmaar on 16 September before travelling to Portugal to face Torreense, where they secured a 2-1 win. They then drew 1-1 away against Lech Poznan on 22 October, collecting another valuable point. However, their fourth fixture brought a setback, as they suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Dinamo Zagreb on 5 November. The result left them with seven points from four matches.
For Sunderland, the challenge now is to recover from that defeat and maintain their position among the teams competing for qualification. Their return to European football has provided an opportunity to test the squad against unfamiliar opposition, while the league-phase structure places considerable importance on consistency. The remaining fixtures will require careful preparation, particularly with difficult away matches still to come. Their supporters will be hoping the team can respond positively when the competition resumes later in November.
Crystal Palace have also experienced a mixture of results during their first European campaign. They opened with an impressive 4-0 home victory against Lech Poznan on 17 September, giving supporters an encouraging start to the competition. However, their second fixture ended in a 3-2 away defeat against Lyon on 15 October. Palace subsequently drew 2-2 against Besiktas in Turkey on 22 October, leaving them with four points before their fourth league-phase match.
Palace's latest fixture saw them host Hoffenheim on 5 November, with the match finishing 1-1. The result added another point to their campaign, taking their total to five from four matches. Although the London club have not maintained the winning form they showed on the opening night, they remain involved in the qualification race. Their remaining fixtures will provide opportunities to improve their position, particularly with another home match against Real Sociedad scheduled for 26 November.
The competition's league-phase format makes every result important. The top eight clubs in the final table will qualify automatically for the round of 16, avoiding an additional knockout play-off round. Teams finishing between ninth and 24th will compete in two-legged play-offs to determine the remaining eight places in the last 16. Clubs finishing between 25th and 36th will be eliminated from European competition for the season, making the points gained during the league phase particularly valuable.
There are several established European sides competing alongside the English representatives. Juventus, AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, Marseille, Lyon and Celtic are among the clubs seeking to progress deep into the tournament. Their participation adds further competition for the available qualification places. The presence of teams with significant European histories also means that the remaining fixtures could produce important changes in the overall standings as clubs attempt to establish themselves among the leading contenders.
Bournemouth's position gives them a valuable advantage heading into the remaining four fixtures. Their next league-phase assignment is an away meeting with Celta Vigo on 26 November, followed by a home game against Viktoria Plzen on 10 December. They will then travel to face Lillestrom on 21 January before concluding the league phase at home against Hapoel Be'er Sheva on 28 January. Maintaining their current form could put the club in a strong position to secure automatic qualification.
Sunderland's next challenge will be a home fixture against Jagiellonia Bialystok on 26 November. They will then travel to Italy to face AC Milan on 10 December, before visiting Anderlecht in Belgium on 21 January. Their final league-phase match is scheduled against Levski Sofia at home on 28 January. The fixture list includes several demanding encounters, and Sunderland will need to collect further points if they are to finish among the teams progressing to the knockout rounds.
Crystal Palace have four further opportunities to improve their position. They are due to welcome Real Sociedad to Selhurst Park on 26 November before travelling to Poland to face Jagiellonia Bialystok on 10 December. Their next fixture will be a home meeting with Sparta Prague on 21 January, followed by an away match against Red Bull Salzburg on 28 January. These games will determine whether Palace can move closer to the automatic qualification places or must compete in the play-offs.
The league phase is scheduled to conclude on 28 January 2027, after which the final standings will determine the clubs progressing to the knockout rounds. The play-off matches are scheduled for February, with the round of 16 taking place in March. The quarter-finals and semi-finals will follow in April and May, respectively. The Europa League final is scheduled for 26 May 2027 in Frankfurt, Germany, where the remaining two clubs will compete for the European title.
For English football, the performances of Bournemouth, Sunderland and Crystal Palace provide an additional storyline throughout this season's European competition. Bournemouth have established themselves among the early leaders, Sunderland are looking to recover from their latest setback, and Palace are working towards greater consistency. With four league-phase matches remaining, the final positions are far from settled, and the coming fixtures will play a decisive role in determining which English clubs continue their European campaigns into the spring.
