Bollard Approved to Prevent Vehicles Accessing Furness Beach

12 Apr 2026 Bollard Approved to Prevent Vehicles Accessing Furness Beach

Authorities have approved new measures to prevent vehicles from accessing a well-known beauty spot in Furness after ongoing concerns about environmental damage and misuse.

The decision will see a removable bollard installed at the entrance to Sandy Gap Beach, where drivers have repeatedly ignored existing “no entry” signs and driven onto the shoreline.

Local residents have raised complaints about people camping in the area, leaving behind waste, and causing damage to the natural surroundings. The new bollard, along with additional signage, aims to stop unauthorised vehicle access while still allowing entry for emergency services and authorised personnel.

The proposal was approved by councillors at a Furness Locality Board meeting, following earlier consultations. Officials confirmed the bollard will be operated using a secure code system, ensuring that emergency responders can gain access when required.

Councillors welcomed the move, noting that previous attempts to deter drivers had failed, with motorists continuing to ignore restrictions and damage the beach environment. The scheme will initially be introduced under an experimental traffic order for a six-month trial period.
