Barrow RNLI Rescues Lone Fisherman Lost in Thick Fog Two Miles Off Walney

10 Jul 2026 Barrow RNLI Rescues Lone Fisherman Lost in Thick Fog Two Miles Off Walney

A lone fisherman was rescued after becoming disorientated in thick fog around two miles south west of Walney Lighthouse. Barrow RNLI launched its all weather lifeboat following a request for assistance from HM Coastguard. The successful rescue brought both the fisherman and his small boat safely back to shore.

The alarm was raised after a passing windfarm crew transfer vessel spotted the fisherman in difficulty offshore. The man, who was alone in a 10 foot river boat, had become confused when visibility rapidly deteriorated in the mist. The crew transfer vessel remained alongside him and contacted HM Coastguard for immediate assistance. Barrow RNLI volunteers were then tasked with carrying out the rescue.

The RNLI's all weather lifeboat, Grace Dixon, reached the casualty after launching from Barrow with a crew of volunteers. Following an assessment of the conditions, the crew decided the safest option was to take the fisherman aboard the lifeboat. His vessel was then taken under tow and returned safely to Roa Island, where he had started his journey earlier that morning. RNLI officials said the quick actions of everyone involved helped ensure a safe outcome.

Barrow RNLI also thanked the crew of the Windcat 38 for staying with the fisherman until the lifeboat arrived. The charity praised the teamwork between the commercial vessel, HM Coastguard and its volunteer crew during the incident. Congratulations were also extended to crew member Paddy Wade, who successfully completed his first emergency call out. Visibility at the time was reduced to around a quarter of a mile because of the dense fog.

The rescue serves as a reminder of how quickly weather conditions can change at sea. RNLI crews continue to encourage anyone heading onto the water to prepare carefully and remain alert to changing visibility.

Barrow RNLI volunteers returned the casualty safely to shore before making the lifeboat ready for its next emergency call. The incident highlighted the importance of rapid communication between mariners and the emergency services. It also demonstrated the dedication of volunteer lifeboat crews who respond whenever lives are at risk at sea. Fortunately, the fisherman was brought home safely without further incident.
