Barrow Raiders face crucial Sheffield clash as they look to recover from Doncaster defeat

01 Oct 2026 Barrow Raiders face crucial Sheffield clash as they look to recover from Doncaster defeat

Barrow Raiders faced a crucial Championship play-off clash with Sheffield as they looked to recover from their heavy Doncaster defeat.

The Raiders were preparing to host Sheffield Eagles in the Betfred Championship eliminator, with the match carrying significant consequences for both sides. The contest was scheduled for a 3pm kick-off, with the losing team set to see its play-off campaign come to an immediate end. For Barrow, the fixture represented an opportunity to respond directly to the disappointment of their previous outing and keep their season alive for another week.

Barrow had entered the match after suffering a 72-0 defeat against Doncaster in the previous round of the play-offs. The result had left the Raiders needing to regroup quickly, with their next fixture providing no room for another setback. Rather than dwelling on the heavy scoreline, the club was focused on producing a much-improved performance against Sheffield and attempting to extend its involvement in the Championship play-offs.

The defeat at Doncaster had been a particularly difficult result for the Raiders, who were now required to recover both physically and mentally before facing Sheffield. The play-off structure meant there was no second opportunity for the loser of this particular contest, increasing the importance of every defensive set, attacking opportunity and individual contribution. Barrow therefore went into the game knowing that their response would determine whether their campaign continued into another week.

Coach Paul Crarey had named a 21-man squad for the Sheffield fixture, with only one alteration from the group selected for the previous trip to Doncaster. The selection provided some continuity within the squad while also bringing an important change to the outside-back positions. Andrew Bulman returned after missing the previous weekend’s match, giving the Raiders another option as they prepared for a demanding play-off contest.

Bulman’s return came at the expense of Finn Dutton, who was ruled out with a shoulder injury. The change meant Barrow retained most of the squad that had travelled to Doncaster, while making one adjustment because of the injury situation. Dutton’s absence removed one option from Crarey’s selection, but Bulman’s return provided an experienced player for a match in which Barrow needed to produce a significantly stronger performance.

The Raiders’ 21-man squad included Archer, Bishop, Broadbent, Bullock, Bulman, Costello, Cresswell, Emslie, Gillam, Johnston and King. The group also featured Knott, Makin, Richards, Robson, Singleton, Stack, Teare, Walker, Wood and Woodend. The selection contained a mixture of established players and squad members who were being called upon to contribute during an important stage of the Championship season.

Among those selected was Ryan Johnston, who had been part of Barrow’s attacking and kicking options throughout the campaign. Ryan King was also included, alongside Greg Richards, Joe Bullock and Curtis Teare, giving Crarey a number of players with recent experience of Championship football. The squad selection underlined the importance placed on consistency as Barrow attempted to recover from their previous performance and remain involved in the competition.

Sheffield also named a 21-man squad for the eliminator, including Brown, Hodson, Gill, Walkley, Morgan, Fitzsimmons, Johnson, Reilly, Bower, Bussey and Butterworth. The Eagles’ selection also featured Griffin, Broadbent, Bowes, Ellis, Oakes, Peachey, Millar, Matongo, Abdull and Eden. With both clubs entering the contest knowing that defeat would end their play-off campaigns, the fixture was set to carry considerable pressure from the opening whistle.

For Barrow, the route beyond the Sheffield game was clear. A victory would send the Raiders through to Week Three of the Championship play-offs, giving them another fixture and another opportunity to continue their campaign. At the time of the squad announcement, however, the identity of their potential next opponent and the precise details of that match had not yet been confirmed.

The immediate priority was therefore Sheffield, with Barrow needing to put the Doncaster result behind them and concentrate on the next challenge. The eliminator format left little margin for error, because only one of the two sides could progress. For Crarey and his players, the match offered a chance to demonstrate a response after the previous weekend and give themselves another opportunity to compete in the later stages of the play-offs.

The selection also demonstrated the importance of squad availability at this stage of the season. Dutton’s shoulder injury meant one change was required, while Bulman’s return helped restore an option that had been missing from the previous matchday group. With the competition reaching its decisive stages, injuries and selection decisions could have a direct effect on the players available to Crarey as he prepared the Raiders for Sheffield.

The Sheffield encounter was consequently about more than simply another fixture in Barrow’s season. It represented a direct opportunity to respond to one of the most difficult results of their campaign, while also providing a route towards another week of Championship play-off rugby. The Raiders knew that only a victory would keep their hopes alive, making the contest one of the most significant matches of their season.

With both squads confirmed, attention turned towards the 3pm kick-off and the task facing the Raiders at home. Barrow had suffered heavily at Doncaster, but the Sheffield eliminator gave them an immediate opportunity to change the narrative around their play-off campaign. A win would move them into Week Three, while defeat would bring their Championship season to an end.
