Barrow Raiders celebrate Sheffield win with end-of-season awards

01 Oct 2026 Barrow Raiders celebrate Sheffield win with end-of-season awards

Barrow Raiders rounded off their Championship play-off victory over Sheffield with an end-of-season awards evening recognising outstanding contributions.

The Raiders had plenty to celebrate after recovering from their heavy defeat against Doncaster by producing a determined 26-10 home victory over Sheffield Eagles. The result kept their Championship play-off campaign alive and provided an immediate response to the disappointing 72-0 defeat they had suffered at Doncaster the previous week. The Sheffield success also meant Barrow earned another opportunity to face Doncaster, this time with a place in the Championship semi-finals at stake.

Before the attention turned back towards their next play-off challenge, the club held its presentation evening to recognise the performances and contributions made throughout the campaign. Players, coaching staff, directors, club volunteers and supporters were among those receiving awards, providing an opportunity for the Raiders to acknowledge the people who had played important roles during a demanding Championship season.

The main individual recipient on the night was forward Ryan King, who collected three separate awards after an impressive campaign. King was named Players’ Player of the Year and Supporters’ Player of the Year, while he also received the Jamie Coyle Dedication Trophy, making him the evening’s most decorated player and highlighting the regard in which he was held within the squad and among supporters.

King’s awards came shortly after he had also played a decisive role in the victory over Sheffield. With Barrow already holding a narrow advantage, he scored the final try of the game in the 73rd minute to complete the 26-10 victory. Ryan Johnston added the conversion, meaning King finished the match with a try before later collecting the major individual honours at the club’s presentation evening.

Fin Dutton was another player recognised during the ceremony, receiving both the Progression Award and the Dave Robinson Rising Star Award. His recognition reflected his development during the season, while Dan Knott was named Young Player of the Year. Curtis Teare also received the Coaches’ Merit Award after contributing to the Raiders’ campaign on the field and producing the work that earned recognition from the coaching staff.

Luke Broadbent was presented with the Man of Steel award, another of the individual honours recognising performances across the campaign. The awards covered different aspects of life at the club, with the evening not simply focused on playing performances but also acknowledging the contribution of people involved in coaching, administration, volunteering and supporting the team throughout the season.

Head coach Paul Crarey received the Directors’ Recognition Award, recognising his contribution to the Raiders during a long and physically demanding Championship campaign. Crarey had guided the side into the play-offs and then helped the players respond after the difficult opening defeat against Doncaster, with the subsequent victory over Sheffield giving the club another chance to progress further in the competition.

Karen Heighton was named Club Person of the Year, while Nathan Eaton received the Supporter of the Year award. Those honours underlined the wider contribution made away from the playing squad, with the Raiders’ season involving a significant network of people whose work and support helped the club operate throughout a demanding campaign.

The presentation evening followed a Sheffield match in which Barrow had made an encouraging start. Ryan Johnston opened the scoring with a penalty after only two minutes before Andrew Bulman crossed for the first try after 18 minutes, following good work from Curtis Teare. Johnston converted, giving the Raiders an 8-0 lead before Sheffield responded later in the half.

Sheffield reduced the deficit in the 26th minute when Billy Walkley crossed for an unconverted try after the Barrow defence was caught out. The visitors’ score ensured the match remained closely contested, with the Raiders holding only an 8-4 advantage at half-time and both sides still within striking distance as they returned for the second period.

Barrow increased their advantage 10 minutes into the second half when Greg Richards went over from close range. Johnston again added the conversion, giving the home side some breathing space before another well-worked attacking move produced a further try on the hour, with Joe Bullock finishing the move and Johnston adding the extras to make it 20-4.

Sheffield responded almost immediately when Kieran Gill intercepted the ball and raced through to score beneath the posts, with Connor Bower converting to make the score 20-10. The visitors’ response ensured Barrow could not relax, but the Raiders regained control before King crossed in the 73rd minute to settle the contest and secure the 26-10 victory that preceded the awards celebrations.

The Sheffield result was particularly significant because it came just one week after Barrow had suffered their heavy defeat at Doncaster. The Raiders responded strongly enough to reach the next stage of the play-offs, although their eventual return to Doncaster ended in a 56-12 defeat, bringing their long Championship campaign to a close.

Despite the eventual play-off exit, the awards evening provided an opportunity for Barrow Raiders to recognise the performances and contributions that had helped them reach the post-season. With King collecting three honours and several other players, staff and supporters also recognised, the presentation brought the competitive campaign to a close while celebrating the people who had contributed to the club throughout the year.
