Barrow Conservation Area Boundaries Agreed in Heritage Review

25 Apr 2026 Barrow Conservation Area Boundaries Agreed in Heritage Review

Changes to the boundary of Barrow’s conservation area have been formally agreed following a heritage review by Westmorland and Furness Council.

The decision forms part of a wider update to conservation area character appraisals and management plans, which are regularly reviewed to ensure they reflect current conditions and properly protect areas of historic and architectural importance.

The Central Barrow Conservation Area, which reflects the town’s 19th-century industrial growth and includes a high concentration of listed buildings such as the Town Hall, has been adjusted as part of the update. The review aims to better define which buildings and streets contribute positively to the area’s historic character.

Some modern developments and less historically significant structures have been considered for removal from the designated boundary, while other spaces of cultural or community value have been added.

Council officials say the changes will help strengthen planning protections in key parts of the town while ensuring the conservation area remains relevant and effective in preserving Barrow’s heritage.

The updated boundary is intended to support both the protection of historic assets and the continued regeneration of the town centre.
