Azalia Claims Prestigious Victory At Shap Hound Racing Meeting
Some of the region's finest racing hounds gathered at Shap for the annual Bitch Produce meeting, one of the most prestigious events on the local hound racing calendar.
The headline event attracted 16 entries, reflecting the importance of the competition within the sport. From the early stages, Azalia and kennel mate Acacia, owned by Geoff and Gillian Higgins and Jake and Zach Green, established themselves among the leading runners. As the race progressed, Azalia gradually increased the advantage before producing a commanding finish to secure a convincing victory.
Foxparke Jubilee's Jackpot finished strongly to claim second place, while Thorn Dot completed the podium ahead of Thorn Daisy, Swifty, and Foxparke Jiggle. Azalia's success was particularly significant as the hound was home bred, adding further pride for the winning connections after an impressive performance on one of the biggest stages of the season.
The meeting also featured a competitive Seniors race, where Sportsman lived up to expectations by producing another impressive display. After racing near the front throughout, Sportsman held off a determined challenge from Jenny's Chance to secure victory, continuing a strong run of recent form.
In the Senior Maidens, Mr Mally staged a late surge to overtake Dundee near the finish and claim first place. The Open Pups race was won by Let Me Try Again, while Ruby emerged victorious in the Open Restricted event after finishing strongly in the closing stages. The day's final Veterans race saw Thorn Pop edge a thrilling finish, with Miterdale Dusk and Sir Robert sharing second place in a dead heat.
The successful meeting once again highlighted the strength of Cumbrian hound racing, with competitive fields, impressive performances, and enthusiastic support from owners, trainers, and spectators. As the racing season continues, many of the day's standout performers are expected to feature prominently in upcoming competitions across the region.
