Approval Granted for 65 New Homes in North Cumbria
A proposed housing development in North Cumbria has received planning approval, paving the way for the construction of 65 new homes in Houghton, near Carlisle.
The scheme, put forward by Story Homes, was given the green light by Cumberland Council, subject to a legal agreement. The development will feature a mix of two- to six-bedroom properties designed to meet a range of housing needs, from first-time buyers to growing families and downsizers.
Around 20 per cent of the homes will be designated as affordable housing, ensuring opportunities for local residents to access the property market.
The project will also include landscaped green spaces, a central play area, and environmentally friendly features such as electric vehicle charging points and solar panels. Developers say these elements are intended to promote sustainability and enhance the quality of life for future residents.
In addition to housing, the development is expected to deliver wider economic benefits, including job creation during the construction phase and increased demand for local services once completed. Financial contributions will also be made towards local infrastructure, including education and public amenities.
The new estate follows a previous successful development in the village and is expected to further support the area’s growth while addressing local housing demand.
Construction work is anticipated to begin later in 2026.
