A66 Closed in Both Directions as Storm Dave Brings Severe Winds

05 Apr 2026 A66 Closed in Both Directions as Storm Dave Brings Severe Winds

A key stretch of the A66 was closed to traffic in both directions as Storm Dave brought severe weather conditions to northern England, prompting safety concerns for motorists.

National Highways confirmed that restrictions were introduced on the route between Scotch Corner and Penrith, initially affecting high-sided vehicles before escalating to a full closure later in the evening.

The decision followed an amber weather warning issued by the Met Office, forecasting strong winds from the evening of April 4 through the early hours of April 5. Gusts were expected to create hazardous driving conditions, particularly for larger vehicles vulnerable to crosswinds.

Authorities urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay updated with road conditions, as the storm posed risks including fallen debris and disruption across transport networks.

The A66, a vital link across northern England, is especially exposed to severe weather in elevated areas, making closures necessary during extreme conditions to ensure public safety.

The route was later reopened once conditions improved, but officials continued to advise caution as Storm Dave impacted wider areas of the region.
