A66 At Warcop Closed In Both Directions After Serious Crash

01 Oct 2026 A66 At Warcop Closed In Both Directions After Serious Crash

The A66 is closed in both directions following a serious collision near Warcop, causing significant disruption for motorists across the area.

The collision happened shortly before 4.30am, with emergency services attending the scene shortly afterwards. The road has been closed between the A6 at Penrith and the A685 at Brough while the incident is dealt with. The closure covers a substantial section of the route and is affecting traffic travelling in both directions through the area.

The road remains closed to protect the scene and allow police to carry out a detailed investigation into the circumstances of the collision. National Highways is supporting the response and managing traffic arrangements around the affected section. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area where possible and allow additional time for their journeys.

The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours while the emergency response and collision investigation continue. The exact duration of a closure following a serious incident can depend on the work required at the scene, including examination of the vehicles and roadway. Drivers should therefore check conditions before travelling and be prepared for delays.

Traffic travelling eastbound is being directed away from the affected section using a signed diversion route. Motorists are advised to take the M6 southbound from the M6 junction 40 roundabout and continue towards Tebay before leaving the motorway at junction 38. From there, vehicles can follow the A685 towards Kirkby Stephen and continue towards Brough to rejoin the A66.

The eastbound diversion is intended to take traffic around the closed section while the investigation remains under way. Drivers following the route should pay close attention to temporary signs and allow extra time for the additional distance involved. The alternative route uses roads through the Tebay and Kirkby Stephen areas before connecting back with the A66 near Brough.

Westbound traffic is also being diverted away from the closure. Drivers are advised to leave the A66 at the A685 junction at Brough before turning onto the A685 towards Kirkby Stephen and continuing towards Tebay. Motorists can then join the M6 northbound at junction 38 and leave at junction 40 to reconnect with the A66.

Both diversion routes include a low bridge with a maximum permitted vehicle height of 14 feet 6 inches. This restriction is particularly important for higher vehicles and operators of large commercial vehicles planning to use the signed alternatives. Vehicles exceeding the stated height limit should not attempt to follow these routes and are instead advised to use the A69 as an alternative.

The closure is affecting one of Cumbria's important east west road links, with the A66 providing connections between areas around Penrith, the Eden Valley and routes towards the east of the county. A significant closure on the route can therefore affect commuters, freight traffic and other road users travelling between Cumbria and neighbouring areas.

Motorists approaching the affected section are advised to follow official diversion signs rather than attempting to pass through the closure. Access arrangements can change while emergency services and investigators are working at the scene. Drivers should also avoid stopping near the incident area unless instructed to do so, as additional space is required for emergency and recovery vehicles.

The serious collision also means that traffic conditions may remain unsettled even away from the immediate closure point. Drivers using alternative roads should expect increased traffic volumes, particularly around junctions and communities along the diversion. Allowing additional journey time and checking for the latest travel information before setting out can help motorists plan around the disruption.

The investigation into the collision is being carried out while the road remains closed. Police need to establish the circumstances of the incident and complete necessary work at the scene before the carriageway can fully return to normal operation. The road will reopen once it is considered safe and the relevant response and investigation work has been completed.

Anyone planning to travel along the A66 between Penrith and Brough should take the closure into account when deciding their route. The affected section currently remains unavailable in both directions, meaning journeys through Warcop cannot continue as normal. Motorists are advised to use the signed diversion routes or consider delaying travel through the area until the road reopens.

National Highways and emergency services are continuing to manage the incident and the associated traffic arrangements. Drivers should remain alert to changing road conditions and follow instructions from signs and officials. Further information about the reopening of the A66 is expected as work at the collision scene progresses.
