A590 Roadworks Begin With Weeks Of Disruption For South Cumbria Drivers
Essential A590 resurfacing work begins with several weeks of traffic restrictions planned around Ulverston and surrounding areas.
National Highways is carrying out the work to improve sections of the A590 and renew road markings between Ulverston and Swarthmoor. The programme is scheduled to run from October 5 until October 31, with different traffic management arrangements introduced as individual parts of the scheme progress. Drivers using the route are being advised to allow additional time for journeys and check arrangements before travelling, particularly during periods when overnight closures are operating.
The first stage of the scheme involves a convoy system through Ulverston. This arrangement is being used to manage traffic while work takes place and is scheduled to remain in place until October 12. Drivers will be guided through the affected section rather than facing a full closure during this initial stage, although delays are possible as vehicles are escorted through the works area.
From October 12, the traffic arrangements will change as overnight closures are introduced between the Booths roundabout and Park Road roundabout. The road will be closed between 8pm and 6am from Monday to Friday during this stage of the project. The overnight restrictions are intended to allow resurfacing and associated work to take place while reducing the impact on daytime traffic.
The main resurfacing works are focused on the section between the Thomas Way junction and Swarthmoor. The project is designed to renew the road surface and improve the condition of the carriageway along the affected section. The work forms part of National Highways' maintenance programme for the strategic road network and is intended to address essential maintenance requirements on the route.
Road markings are also being renewed as part of the wider project. Marking work is planned between the Booths roundabout and the Thomas Way junction, as well as between Swarthmoor and the Park Road roundabout. The combined resurfacing and marking programme means that several sections of the route will be subject to changing traffic management arrangements as the work progresses.
A signed diversion will be provided when the overnight closures are operating. Drivers will be directed to use the A595 and A5092 as the alternative route around the closed section. Motorists unfamiliar with the diversion are being advised to follow the official signs rather than relying solely on satellite navigation, as temporary road arrangements can affect the most suitable route through the area.
Some side roads will also be closed at different stages of the project. The exact restrictions will depend on which part of the scheme is being carried out at the time. Drivers who regularly use local side roads around Ulverston and Swarthmoor may therefore experience different arrangements during the course of the works and should pay attention to temporary signs and traffic management measures.
Emergency service access will be maintained throughout the work. This means arrangements will remain in place to allow emergency vehicles to reach the affected areas despite the restrictions. National Highways has also been working with Westmorland and Furness Council as part of the planning for the project, with the stated aim of managing the disruption caused by the necessary road improvements.
The project is expected to affect both local journeys and longer trips through South Cumbria. The A590 provides an important connection for communities around Ulverston and forms part of the wider road network serving the Furness area. Changes to traffic flow can therefore have consequences beyond the immediate work zone, particularly during busy periods when additional vehicles are using alternative routes.
Drivers travelling through Ulverston during the convoy stage should expect their journeys to take longer than normal. Convoy systems are used to control the movement of traffic through roadworks where lanes or sections of carriageway are affected by construction activity. Motorists are being encouraged to remain patient, follow instructions from traffic management arrangements and avoid attempting to pass through restricted areas.
The overnight closure period is expected to provide the main disruption for drivers who normally use the A590 during evening and early morning hours. The closure window runs from 8pm until 6am on weekdays, meaning the affected section will be unavailable to through traffic during those hours. Drivers travelling at these times will need to use the signed diversion through the A595 and A5092.
The work programme is scheduled to continue through October 31, although individual activities will take place at different stages. This means traffic restrictions will not necessarily remain identical throughout the entire project. The convoy system and overnight closures form separate stages of the programme, while side road restrictions may also change depending on the location of active works.
National Highways has warned that road users should take account of the changing arrangements when planning journeys. Temporary traffic management is necessary to provide safe working conditions for construction teams while allowing essential maintenance to be completed. Drivers approaching the work area should follow temporary speed limits, signs and instructions from traffic management personnel.
The resurfacing scheme follows wider maintenance activity on major roads across Cumbria, where maintaining road surfaces and markings is intended to support safer and more reliable journeys. The A590 is an important route for residents, businesses, commuters and visitors travelling around South Cumbria, making the planned maintenance significant for the wider local transport network.
Weather and site conditions can also affect the timing of roadworks. National Highways has indicated that work programmes can change where conditions prevent planned activities from being carried out safely or effectively. Drivers should therefore remain alert to any updated traffic information as the project progresses and allow additional time where necessary.
The current programme means drivers should prepare for changing conditions on the A590 throughout October. The initial convoy arrangements will be followed by weekday overnight closures, while resurfacing, road marking renewal and side road restrictions are introduced across different parts of the scheme. Planning journeys in advance will help motorists reduce delays and choose appropriate alternative routes.
The A590 works are expected to provide essential improvements to the carriageway and road markings once completed. For the duration of the project, however, drivers in and around Ulverston will need to accommodate temporary restrictions and potential delays. National Highways and Westmorland and Furness Council are working together to manage the impact while the maintenance programme is carried out.
Motorists using the route are advised to check the latest traffic information before setting out, particularly if travelling during the overnight closure period. Following signed diversions and temporary traffic management will help keep traffic moving safely while work continues. The project is currently scheduled to run until October 31, with the precise arrangements changing as different stages of the scheme are completed.
