£600,000 appeal launched to save historic cathedral organ

27 Mar 2026 £600,000 appeal launched to save historic cathedral organ

A major appeal has been launched to secure the future of the historic organ at Carlisle Cathedral, with fundraisers aiming to raise the remaining £600,000 needed for its restoration.

The cathedral’s Father Willis organ, which has been in use for around 170 years, requires extensive repair work as it approaches a critical stage in its lifespan. The full restoration project is expected to cost £2.4 million.

The instrument is a complex piece of engineering, featuring nearly 4,000 pipes, 72 stops and intricate mechanical systems, many of which are custom-built and cannot be easily replaced.

Although it has been regularly maintained, the organ has not undergone a full overhaul in almost three decades, and experts warn that without intervention it risks serious deterioration.

Significant progress has already been made towards the funding target, including a £1.6 million grant from the Benny Walker Charitable Trust, alongside additional support from cathedral partners and donors.

Church leaders say the organ plays a central role in worship and community life, supporting everything from daily services to major musical events, and are now calling on the public to help secure its future.

Donations, pledges and grants are being sought to close the funding gap and ensure the instrument continues to be heard for generations to come.
