1000 South Cumbrian children lose school transport
Around 1000 children in South Cumbria are expected to be affected after changes to school transport rules mean they will no longer qualify for council funded travel.
The decision comes as local authorities continue to review and tighten eligibility criteria for home to school transport due to increasing financial pressure and rising costs.
Under the updated policy only pupils who meet specific distance and eligibility requirements will continue to receive free transport. Families whose children fall outside these criteria will now be responsible for arranging their own school journeys.
Parents have expressed concern that the changes could place additional financial strain on households especially in rural areas where public transport options are limited. Some families say the decision could also impact attendance and punctuality for students who previously relied on dedicated school buses.
Council officials argue that the revised system is necessary to ensure long-term sustainability and to focus resources on those most in need including pupils with special educational needs or those living beyond statutory walking distances.
The policy change is part of a wider review of school transport provision across the region with similar adjustments being considered in other parts of the country facing budget pressures.
Despite the changes, support remains in place for eligible pupils, and families affected may still have access to alternative assistance schemes depending on their circumstances.
