£1,000 Book Boost Breathes New Life into School Library
Pupils at Newbarns Primary and Nursery School in Barrow have been given a fresh incentive to explore the world of books after receiving a £1,000 donation to refresh their school library. The contribution was generously made by Les Hall, a local councillor and school governor, who chose to allocate his full ward allowance for the year to support reading and literacy at the school.
Mr Hall, who represents the Hawcoat and Newbarns ward on Westmorland and Furness Council, said he wanted to make reading a positive and exciting experience for pupils, not just something they do as part of their schoolwork. He explained that his own love of reading inspired him to back the project, especially after seeing how increasing literacy is a priority for the council.
Headteacher Victoria Fitzgibbons, whose school is part of the South Cumbria Multi-Academy Trust, welcomed the donation and highlighted the difference it will make to pupils’ development. She noted that reading for pleasure plays an important role in children’s confidence and wellbeing, and expressed her gratitude for the support. With the help of the school librarian, the funding will be used to bring in new titles that are engaging, diverse, and sure to inspire young readers.
The community-driven initiative reflects a wider commitment to promoting literacy and fostering a love of reading among children in South Cumbria, enhancing educational opportunities beyond the classroom.
