Tropical Storm Bertha Weakens After Bringing Heavy Rain To Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Bertha has weakened to a tropical depression after making landfall on the US Gulf Coast, but forecasters warn that heavy rain, flash flooding, and hazardous coastal conditions remain a threat across parts of Louisiana and Texas as the storm continues moving westward.

Bertha came ashore in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, before tracking west along the northern Gulf Coast. Although the system has weakened, meteorologists say slow movement and persistent rain bands continue to pose the greatest danger, particularly in low lying and flood prone communities.

The National Hurricane Center has forecast rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 6 inches. Such rainfall could trigger flash flooding, especially in urban areas and locations with poor drainage.

Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for sections of the Texas and Louisiana coastline. Coastal communities have also been warned about dangerous surf, rip currents, minor storm surge flooding, and wind gusts reaching approximately 45 mph.

Emergency management agencies have urged residents to avoid driving through flooded roads, monitor official weather updates, and prepare for possible localised power outages caused by strong winds and saturated ground. Authorities are also advising beachgoers to stay out of the water due to hazardous wave conditions.

Bertha is the second named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. While the storm is expected to continue weakening as it moves inland, forecasters caution that flooding often remains the greatest risk even after tropical systems lose strength.

Meteorologists continue to monitor the storm's progress and expect conditions to gradually improve once the system moves farther inland and dissipates. However, residents across the affected Gulf Coast states have been advised to remain vigilant until all flood and severe weather warnings are lifted.
