Russian Missile Barrage On Kyiv Kills One As Ukraine Air Defences Stretched
Russia launched one of its heaviest missile and drone assaults on Ukraine's capital overnight, killing at least one person and injuring 16 others after firing 41 missiles and 125 drones at targets across the country, with Kyiv bearing the brunt of the attack.
According to Ukrainian officials, most of the ballistic missiles were directed at Kyiv, where explosions echoed across several districts for hours. Residential buildings, warehouses, commercial premises, and public infrastructure were damaged, while emergency crews battled fires and searched affected areas for survivors.
Ukraine's Air Force said it intercepted 18 missiles and destroyed 108 attack drones during the overnight assault, but acknowledged that several ballistic missiles penetrated the country's air defences. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack highlighted Ukraine's urgent need for additional Patriot missile defence systems to better protect major cities.
Russian officials said the strikes targeted facilities linked to Ukraine's defence industry, including sites involved in drone production, missile components, and military logistics. Ukrainian authorities, however, said civilian neighbourhoods suffered significant damage and accused Moscow of deliberately targeting populated areas.
The latest assault comes as fighting continues to intensify across multiple fronts, with both Russia and Ukraine carrying out long range strikes against military and energy infrastructure. Ukrainian forces have also continued attacks on Russian logistics hubs and oil facilities in an effort to disrupt military supply chains.
International leaders have renewed calls for restraint, warning that continued escalation risks worsening the humanitarian crisis and prolonging a conflict that has now entered its fifth year. Western governments are continuing discussions over additional military assistance, particularly advanced air defence systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.
Rescue operations remained ongoing throughout Sunday as emergency workers cleared debris and assessed damage across Kyiv. Officials warned that the casualty toll could rise as inspections continue, while residents prepared for the possibility of further air raid alerts in the coming days.
