Furness Abbey Medieval Fair Draws Families For Weekend Of History And Entertainment.

Families and visitors were drawn to Furness Abbey for a special Medieval Fair, offering a weekend opportunity to step back in time and experience life from the medieval period.

The annual event took place at the historic abbey on Saturday, September 5, running from 10am until 5pm. Organised by the Furness Abbey Fellowship, the fair brought together living history groups, craftspeople and activities designed to appeal to visitors of all ages.

Visitors were able to explore the historic surroundings of Furness Abbey while enjoying a range of medieval themed attractions. Living history displays helped recreate aspects of everyday life from centuries ago, giving families an opportunity to learn about the past in an interactive setting.

The event also featured traditional crafts and family activities, creating plenty for younger visitors and adults to enjoy throughout the day. Food and refreshments were available at the site, adding to the atmosphere and making the event a popular choice for a family day out.

Furness Abbey provided a particularly fitting setting for the event. The historic site was founded in the 12th century and became one of the richest and most powerful Cistercian abbeys in medieval England. Its extensive red sandstone ruins now attract visitors interested in the history and heritage of the Furness area.

The Medieval Fair also gave local residents and visitors a chance to experience the abbey in a different way, combining heritage, entertainment and community activities. The event has become an annual feature of the local calendar and continues to highlight the area's rich medieval history.

Organisers asked adults to make a voluntary £2.50 donation towards funding future events, while eligible local residents and English Heritage members could access the event under the relevant entry arrangements.

The fair once again demonstrated the appeal of Furness Abbey as a heritage destination, bringing history to life for families while supporting community involvement and encouraging more people to discover one of the region's most important historic landmarks.
