Barrow Festival Of The Sea Sets 2027 Date For Milestone Year.
The Royal Port of Barrow Festival of the Sea is set to return next year, with organisers preparing for another celebration of the town’s strong connection with the sea and its historic port.
The annual festival has become an important event in Barrow’s calendar, bringing together boats, maritime displays, entertainment, community organisations and family activities. The 2026 festival took place on August 8 and 9, attracting visitors to the town’s waterfront.
The festival has a history stretching back several decades. According to Rotary Furness, the first major Barrow festival took place in 2002, when the event included powerboat racing, tall ships and a Red Arrows flypast. Organisers estimated that the event attracted as many as 30,000 visitors.
After several years when large-scale festivals could not be sustained, the maritime celebrations returned in a smaller format. A Tall Ships Festival was created in 2017, with the events continuing and gradually developing into the Festival of the Sea that takes place today.
This year's festival included a range of attractions celebrating Barrow's maritime identity. Visitors were able to see vessels at Town Quay, enjoy live entertainment and take part in family activities. The event also featured the Pelican of London, with visitors given opportunities to explore the historic sailing vessel.
The festival has also provided opportunities for community groups to become involved. In 2026, 10 local veterans were supported by Barrow Town Council to take part in a sailing experience aboard the Klevia before arriving in Barrow in time for the Festival of the Sea. The council said the experience helped create new friendships and lasting memories.
Organisers have previously highlighted the festival's role in celebrating the importance of Barrow's port and maritime heritage. The port was granted the Royal Port title by King Charles in 2025, recognising its historic role in Britain's trade and shipbuilding and its continuing importance to the town.
The event also supports local community organisations. Organisers have said that groups including the RNLI and Cumbria Blood Bikes benefit from the festival, while local artists, makers and community organisations are given opportunities to showcase their work.
The announcement of the 2027 festival date means visitors and local residents can begin planning for another weekend of maritime entertainment in Barrow. With the event continuing to develop, organisers are expected to build on the attractions and community involvement seen during this year's festival.
For Barrow, the Festival of the Sea remains an opportunity to celebrate its coastal identity, shipbuilding heritage and connection with the water, while bringing residents and visitors together for a major community event.
The 2027 celebration will therefore provide another opportunity for Barrow to showcase its maritime history and the people, organisations and businesses that continue to play a role in the town's relationship with the sea.
