New Wegovy Style Weight Loss Pills Not Yet Available Through NHS GPs
A new Wegovy style weight loss pill has become available through private pharmacies across the UK. However, it is not currently available on NHS prescription through GPs. Health officials say further assessment is needed before any NHS rollout.
The once daily tablet contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in Wegovy injections, offering a needle free alternative for people seeking weight management treatment. Patients can only obtain the medication through a private prescription following a clinical assessment. Prices vary depending on the dosage and pharmacy, with costs starting from around £69 per month.
Despite receiving approval from the UK's medicines regulator, the treatment has not yet been approved for NHS prescribing. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is still waiting for further evidence from manufacturer Novo Nordisk before it can assess whether the drug should be made available through the health service. Until that process is complete, GPs are unable to prescribe the tablets on the NHS.
Medical experts have welcomed the introduction of an oral alternative to weekly injections but have warned that the medicine should only be taken under professional supervision. They also cautioned patients against buying counterfeit products from unregulated websites, stressing that genuine prescriptions should always follow a medical consultation.
The tablets are designed to be used alongside a healthy diet and increased physical activity rather than as a standalone solution for weight loss. Clinical studies have shown the medication can help people lose significant amounts of weight when combined with long term lifestyle changes.
Thousands of people have already registered interest in the new treatment, reflecting growing demand for effective weight loss medicines. However, NHS patients will have to wait until the necessary approval process has been completed before the pills become available through GP services.
