Lake District Village Secures Future of Local GP Services

22 May 2026 Lake District Village Secures Future of Local GP Services

People living in the Lake District village of Coniston have been reassured that GP services will remain available locally following an agreement between healthcare providers and NHS officials.

Central Lakes Medical Group, part of Cumbria Health, will open a branch practice in Coniston on July 1 after negotiations with the NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board.

The decision follows concerns over the future of healthcare services in the village after the retirement of local GP Dr Katharina Frey. The existing contract for Coniston Medical Practice had been returned to the NHS, while efforts to find a long-term replacement provider were unsuccessful.

During the interim period, services were maintained by the Morecambe Bay Primary Care Collaborative on a temporary caretaker basis.

Health officials said the new arrangement would ensure residents continue to receive general medical services within the village. Around 1,000 registered patients will be transferred either to Central Lakes Medical Group or to another nearby practice.

Patients registered with Central Lakes Medical Group will also be able to access healthcare services at the organisation’s other sites, including surgeries in Hawkshead and Ambleside.

The Coniston branch is expected to operate three days a week initially while plans for a long-term premises solution are developed. Services will continue to run from the current Wraysdale House location until a new site is identified.

Officials welcomed the outcome, saying local residents had consistently expressed a strong desire to retain.
