Hantavirus Concerns Raised After Deaths Linked to Historic Ship in Rotterdam
Health officials in the Netherlands are investigating concerns over hantavirus exposure linked to a historic ship docked in Rotterdam after several people reportedly became seriously ill.
Authorities confirmed that multiple individuals who had recently spent time aboard the vessel developed symptoms consistent with hantavirus infection, prompting an urgent public health investigation. Officials are now working to determine how exposure may have occurred and whether additional people could be at risk.
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious disease usually spread through contact with infected rodents or exposure to contaminated droppings, urine or saliva. Symptoms can initially resemble flu-like illness but may progress to severe respiratory complications in some cases.
Investigators believe the infections may be connected to rodent activity aboard the ship, although laboratory testing and further inspections are continuing. Public health teams have been carrying out cleaning operations and tracing people who may have visited the vessel in recent weeks.
Officials stressed that the overall risk to the wider public remains low but advised anyone who recently visited the ship and later developed fever, breathing difficulties or flu-like symptoms to seek medical attention promptly.
The investigation remains ongoing as health authorities continue efforts to identify the exact source of the outbreak and prevent any further infections.
