Five Cancer Research Shops Across Lancashire and Cumbria Set to Close Amid Major Restructure

11 May 2026 Five Cancer Research Shops Across Lancashire and Cumbria Set to Close Amid Major Restructure

Five Cancer Research UK charity shops across Lancashire and Cumbria are preparing to close as the organisation moves forward with a major restructuring of its retail operations. The closures form part of a wider national strategy aimed at reducing costs and focusing on higher performing stores across the UK.

The charity confirmed that rising operational expenses, inflation pressures, changing shopping habits, and reduced high street footfall have all contributed to the difficult decision. Officials say the changes are designed to protect long term funding for vital cancer research projects.

Among the locations affected in the region are shops in Lancaster, Keswick, Penrith, Workington, and Morecambe, with some already closed and others expected to shut in the coming months. The move has disappointed many local residents who regularly supported the stores through donations and volunteering.

Cancer Research UK stated that the organisation plans to reduce its traditional high street presence and instead focus on a smaller network of what it describes as high performing stores. At the same time, the charity is investing in larger out of town superstores to adapt to changing customer behaviour.

The charity also revealed that the restructuring is expected to help generate millions of pounds in additional funding for life saving cancer research over the next several years. Despite the closures, officials thanked staff, volunteers, and supporters for their continued commitment and contribution to the organisation’s work.

Local communities across Lancashire and Cumbria are now reacting to the news, with many expressing sadness over the loss of familiar charity shops that have long been part of town centres and local fundraising efforts.
