Ebola Outbreak Kills Dozens in Eastern DR Congo as Health Officials Race to Contain Spread

16 May 2026 Ebola Outbreak Kills Dozens in Eastern DR Congo as Health Officials Race to Contain Spread

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo are battling a new Ebola outbreak that has already killed dozens of people in the country’s conflict-affected eastern region. According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), at least 65 people have died while approximately 246 suspected cases have been recorded in Iturbi Province, an area that has experienced repeated outbreaks of deadly diseases in recent years.

The outbreak has triggered urgent concern among regional and international health agencies, which fear the virus could spread rapidly if containment efforts are delayed. Medical response teams have been deployed to affected communities to trace contacts, isolate infected patients and launch emergency vaccination programmes aimed at preventing wider transmission.

Officials say the majority of reported cases are concentrated in the areas of Mongwalu and Rwampara in eastern Congo, where healthcare systems are already under severe pressure due to insecurity, displacement and limited medical infrastructure.

Ebola is one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, causing severe fever, internal bleeding and organ failure. The virus spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, and outbreaks can quickly become difficult to control in regions with weak healthcare systems. Although vaccines and treatments have improved survival rates in recent years, rapid response remains critical to preventing large-scale epidemics.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has faced multiple Ebola outbreaks over the past decade, including one of the deadliest epidemics in modern history between 2018 and 2020. Health experts warn that repeated outbreaks continue to expose long-standing weaknesses in the country’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly in remote and conflict-hit regions.

Local authorities are also struggling against misinformation and fear among communities. Public health officials say false rumours circulating through social media and local networks are making some residents reluctant to seek medical treatment or cooperate with response teams.

Africa CDC and international partners are now working closely with Congolese health authorities to strengthen surveillance, increase laboratory testing and ensure protective equipment reaches frontline healthcare workers. Emergency teams are also conducting awareness campaigns to educate communities about symptoms, prevention methods and the importance of early treatment.

The outbreak comes at a time when global health systems remain alert to the growing threat of infectious diseases emerging in vulnerable regions. Experts say rapid containment in eastern Congo will be essential not only for protecting local communities but also for preventing the virus from crossing borders into neighbouring countries.

Health officials have urged residents in affected areas to report symptoms immediately and avoid contact with infected individuals, while neighbouring countries have increased border monitoring and preparedness measures as a precaution against regional spread.
