Barrow to host one of first neighbourhood health centres in national rollout
Barrow has been selected as one of the first 27 locations in England to receive a new neighbourhood health centre under a major government initiative to bring healthcare closer to communities.
The scheme will see the Alfred Barrow Centre on Duke Street included in the initial wave of centres due to open by 2027, delivering urgent treatment, GP appointments and pharmacy services all under one roof.
Officials say the model will eventually expand to offer wider support, including debt advice, employment guidance and family support services, with centres expected to be open 12 hours a day, six days a week.
The first 27 sites are backed by £200 million in government investment to upgrade existing buildings, forming part of a broader pledge to establish 250 neighbourhood health centres by 2036, with 120 targeted to open by 2030.
The planned upgrade to the Alfred Barrow Health Centre follows a November announcement of a £7 million investment, with work anticipated to begin shortly. Local leaders, health officials and Barrow’s MP have been actively involved in plans to enhance health services in the area.
Health ministers describe the project as part of wider reforms aimed at reshaping the NHS so that services are structured around patients’ lives, tackling health needs and their root causes in the community rather than in hospitals.
