Lake District: Dramatic Helvellyn Rescue After Walker Suffers Head Injury
The injured man, who was out with two friends, was left unable to continue after the fall. His companions immediately dialled 999, alerting Keswick Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) and Penrith MRT, who responded alongside the Coastguard.
Before the rescue teams arrived, the group received unexpected help from a passing nurse and an off-duty Keswick MRT member who came across the scene while walking with his partner. The rescuer was carrying a bothy bag, which provided vital emergency shelter for the casualty and his friends, helping prevent the onset of hypothermia in the sub zero conditions.
“Hypothermia is a serious risk with an immobile trauma casualty at any time of the year,” a Keswick MRT spokesperson said.
Given the severity of the man’s injuries and the extreme cold at the summit England’s third-highest peak a Coastguard helicopter was dispatched. Rescue 199 arrived shortly before volunteer teams from Keswick and Penrith, who worked together to stabilise the casualty before he was winched aboard the aircraft and flown to the Cumberland Infirmary.
The operation marked Keswick MRT’s 122nd incident of the year and involved 20 team members, lasting just over three hours from the initial 2:08pm callout. Penrith MRT contributed an additional five volunteers.
Keswick MRT expressed gratitude for the support, saying: “Thanks to Penrith, who responded to our initially low numbers by sending five team members.”
