‘Dead’ Thai Woman Wakes Up Inside Coffin Moments Before Cremation
The shocking incident took place at Wat Rat Prakhong Tham, a Buddhist temple just outside Bangkok. Staff were preparing for the cremation when they heard an unexpected sound.
A knock from the coffin
Temple manager Pairat Soodthoop said he was standing near the coffin when he heard a faint but clear knocking from inside.
“I was surprised and asked them to open it,” he said. “When the lid lifted, she opened her eyes slightly and knocked again. She must have been knocking for a long time.”
The cremation ceremony was minutes away from starting and was even set to be live streamed online.
Thought she had died two days earlier
According to reports, the woman named Chonthirat Sakulkoo had been bedridden for two years. Her health suddenly declined, and she became unresponsive. Her family believed she had stopped breathing.
Her brother, Mongkol Sakulkoo, said local officials in their home province in northern Thailand told him she had died. Following her wishes, he tried to donate her organs in Bangkok, but was turned away because he lacked the required documents.
With no other option, he placed her in a coffin and drove 300 miles (500 km) from Phitsanulok province to Bangkok for the cremation.
A miracle or a mistake?
Just moments before the cremation fire was lit, the woman proved she was still alive. Temple staff and family members were left in shock.
She was immediately removed from the coffin and taken for medical evaluation.
Authorities are now investigating how the woman was mistakenly declared dead and how she survived being inside a sealed coffin for so long.
