Cumbria’s Young Mountain Climber Prepares for Record-Breaking Charity Challenge

19 May 2026 Cumbria’s Young Mountain Climber Prepares for Record-Breaking Charity Challenge

A remarkable young adventurer from Cumbria is preparing to embark on another extraordinary mountain challenge as he aims to raise thousands of pounds for charity while potentially securing a new world record.

Frankie McMillan, a 10-year-old from Gosforth, has announced plans to climb 32 mountain peaks across Europe during a major expedition beginning later this month in Spain and Andorra. The ambitious challenge is being carried out in support of the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young, with Frankie hoping to raise £50,000 for the organisation.

The challenge carries a deeply personal meaning for the young climber. Frankie decided to support the charity after discovering that his close friend, Xander Morris, suffers from Long QT Syndrome Type 2, a potentially life-threatening heart condition that can cause dangerous irregular heart rhythms.

Despite his young age, Frankie has already built an impressive reputation in the world of mountain climbing. According to reports, he has climbed more than 1,000 mountains around the world and previously completed ascents including Mount Olympus and routes connected to Mount Everest expeditions.

Frankie’s passion for climbing began when he was just three years old after completing his first Wainwright fell with his mother, Basia McMillan, who works as both a mountain rescue volunteer and professional mountain guide. Since then, the pair have tackled peaks across the UK and internationally, turning Frankie into one of Cumbria’s best-known young adventurers.

The upcoming “Euro Peak Challenge” is expected to test Frankie’s endurance, determination, and resilience as he attempts to summit dozens of mountains during the expedition. Specialist local guides will accompany Frankie and his mother throughout the challenge to ensure safety during the climbs.

Outdoor clothing brand Dare 2b has also stepped in to support the challenge, providing equipment and backing for Frankie’s latest adventure and future fundraising efforts.

Sally Bailey, marketing manager for Dare 2b, praised Frankie’s efforts and described the team behind the brand as inspired by his determination and commitment to helping others. The company said it would continue supporting his future projects following the European expedition.

Frankie’s mother Basia said watching her son dedicate himself to helping his friend has been an emotional experience. She praised his kindness and determination, adding that he has already inspired many people through his fundraising and mountain achievements.

Frankie himself explained that every mountain he climbs is for his best friend Xander and for others living with serious heart conditions. He said he hopes the challenge will help raise awareness, support lifesaving work, and show people facing health struggles that they are not alone.

The young climber has already raised more than £26,000 for Cardiac Risk in the Young through previous fundraising efforts, and supporters hope the latest challenge will help him reach his ambitious £50,000 target.

Cardiac Risk in the Young is a UK charity dedicated to preventing young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness campaigns, heart screenings, and support for affected families. Conditions such as Long QT Syndrome can sometimes go undetected until serious medical emergencies occur, making awareness and early diagnosis especially important.

Frankie’s story has captured widespread attention across Cumbria and beyond, with many people praising both his athletic achievements and his dedication to helping others at such a young age. As preparations continue for the challenge beginning on May 23, supporters will be closely following his progress across Europe.

If successful, Frankie’s expedition could see him enter the record books while continuing to raise awareness and vital funds for children and families affected by heart conditions.
