Cumbrians urged to safeguard water pipes as temperatures fall

United Utilities has advised homeowners and businesses to check and insulate their pipework to reduce the risk of pipes freezing and bursting. When temperatures drop below zero, water inside pipes can freeze and expand. Once the weather warms up again, this can place pressure on weakened pipes, leading to cracks, leaks, or full bursts.
To help prevent winter damage, the company is reminding people to think PIPE, which stands for:

Prepare: Locate your stop tap and make sure it works. Keep contact details for a plumber handy and check whether your insurance covers leaks or burst pipes.
Insulate: Add insulation to pipes in colder areas, such as garages, lofts, or outdoor spaces.
Protect: Cover exposed fixtures like outside taps with proper insulated covers.
Easy :Take action now it’s simple and inexpensive.

United Utilities also recommends wrapping vulnerable pipes with lagging and paying special attention to those in unheated areas like garages, cellars, and external walls, where pipes are most likely to freeze. Loft pipes can also be at risk and may benefit from extra insulation to keep them warm through the coldest months.
