Cumbria Crash Carnage: Car Hits Tree at Height, Engine Blown Free
A driver escaped without serious injury after a dramatic and destructive crash near Wigton on Saturday night, according to Cumbria Roads Policing Unit. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports that a vehicle had left the road at substantial speed.
Police say initial investigations indicate the car veered off the carriageway before slamming into a tree around ten feet up its trunk, a sign of the velocity and impact involved. The collision propelled the wreckage a further 40 to 50 feet along the road, scattering debris across the area. Officers reported that the force was so extreme that the engine was completely ejected from the vehicle and found an additional 10 to 20 feet away.
Despite the catastrophic damage, the driver was able to walk from the wreck and was assessed by paramedics, who confirmed he had not suffered serious injuries. Officers described his survival as “lucky,” given the nature of the crash.
However, the situation escalated when the driver failed a roadside drug wipe for cannabis. He was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and possession of cannabis. Collision investigators are now analysing the scene to determine the exact sequence of events, including speed, road conditions, and any further contributing factors.
Police have reiterated the dangers of impaired driving, warning that while the driver escaped with minor injuries, the consequences could easily have been far worse for him and other road users. Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
