National Arts Leaders to Join Major Cultural Summit in Barrow

01 Jun 2026 National Arts Leaders to Join Major Cultural Summit in Barrow

Two of Britain’s most influential cultural figures are set to headline a major arts summit in Barrow as local leaders push forward ambitious plans to transform the town through creativity and cultural development.

Darren Henley, chief executive of Arts Council England, and renowned designer Wayne Hemingway will attend the Barrow Arts Dividend Summit at the University of Cumbria on June 8. The event will bring together artists, civic leaders, community organizations, and cultural partners to discuss how the arts can help drive social and economic renewal in the town.

Organizers say the summit represents a significant moment for Barrow as it seeks to strengthen its cultural identity while pursuing wider regeneration projects. Discussions will focus on how investment in arts and culture can improve quality of life, encourage community participation, and support long-term economic growth.

Henley, a prominent advocate for cultural investment, is expected to share insights on the national role of the arts in building stronger communities. Hemingway, co-founder of HemingwayDesign and chairman of Barrow Creative, will lead collaborative sessions exploring how creative projects can help redefine the town’s future and attract new opportunities.

The summit comes as Barrow continues to expand its cultural profile through festivals, exhibitions, and community-led initiatives. Recent projects have included the Barrow Does Comics festival, arts programs supported by local organizations, and wider efforts to position culture at the centre of urban development plans.

Participants at the summit are expected to develop a shared cultural vision for the town, identify priority areas for investment, and lay the groundwork for a long-term strategy known as the Arts Dividend Roadmap. Organizers hope the plan will help establish Barrow as a national example of how creativity can support regeneration and community renewal.

The event also aligns with broader ambitions for Barrow to strengthen its position within the UK cultural landscape, including aspirations linked to future Town of Culture initiatives and major redevelopment projects across the region.

Supporters of the initiative argue that arts and culture have become increasingly important to Barrow’s future, not only as a source of entertainment and expression but also as a driver of tourism, education, and local pride. With national cultural leaders now taking part in the conversation, expectations are growing that the summit could mark a turning point in the town’s ongoing transformation.
