Major Clean Up Operation Underway as Appleby Horse Fair Comes to an End

09 Jun 2026 Major Clean Up Operation Underway as Appleby Horse Fair Comes to an End

A major clean-up effort is now underway in Cumbria as the 2026 Appleby Horse Fair enters its final stages and thousands of visitors begin leaving the area.

The fair's Multi-Agency Strategic Co-ordinating Group (MASCG), which oversees the public sector response to the event, confirmed that dedicated cleaning teams have been deployed across Appleby, Kirkby Stephen, and nearby locations to remove litter and carry out extensive street-cleaning operations. Officials hope the work will be completed by the end of the week as communities return to normal after several days of heightened activity.

The annual fair, one of the largest cultural gatherings for Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities in Europe, attracts thousands of participants and visitors each year. During the event, Appleby and surrounding areas experience a significant increase in population, traffic, and business activity, requiring extensive coordination between police, local councils, emergency services, and community organizations.

Officials said many travellers have already begun their journeys to their next destinations as the fair winds down. Attention has now shifted from event management and public safety to restoring roads, public spaces, and community areas affected by the influx of visitors. Cleaning crews have been working throughout the town and surrounding districts collecting waste, sweeping streets, and ensuring public areas are returned to their usual condition.

Local authorities are also seeking feedback from residents, businesses, and fairgoers. A post-fair community meeting has been scheduled at Appleby Public Hall, where representatives from police, local government, fire and rescue services, and other agencies will discuss this year's event and hear suggestions for future improvements. The meeting is intended to provide an open forum for people to share their experiences, raise concerns, and contribute ideas for future editions of the fair.

This year's fair attracted national attention due to enhanced security measures, including the use of live facial recognition technology by police, as well as a number of safety and welfare operations carried out during the event. Authorities reported proactive efforts to address public safety concerns, enforce regulations, and support both local residents and visitors throughout the gathering.

Despite the logistical challenges that accompany an event of this scale, officials praised the cooperation between agencies and community members. They emphasized that the clean-up operation is a vital final stage in ensuring the historic fair leaves a positive legacy for both visitors and local residents.

As the last caravans and horse-drawn vehicles depart from Cumbria, crews will continue working to restore affected areas, marking the conclusion of another chapter in the long-running history of the Appleby Horse Fair.
