Historic Spitfire to soar over Cumbria for 90th anniversary celebrations

09 Apr 2026 Historic Spitfire to soar over Cumbria for 90th anniversary celebrations

A historic Spitfire will take to the skies above Cumbria as part of a special UK-wide tour commemorating the 90th anniversary of the legendary aircraft.

The anniversary programme, organised in partnership with the Royal Air Force, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and Spitfires.com, features a series of nine flights across Britain—each representing a decade of the aircraft’s service and legacy.

Cumbria is set to feature in the schedule on Monday, April 13, when the Spitfire will pass over the region during its journey from Prestwick in Scotland to RAF Valley in Anglesey. The aircraft is expected to depart at around 10am, with the flight lasting just over an hour.

During this leg, the Spitfire will be accompanied by two Hawk T2 jets, adding to the spectacle for aviation enthusiasts and residents hoping to catch a glimpse of the iconic warbird overhead.

The commemorative tour began on April 7 and will continue across multiple locations in the UK, subject to weather conditions and operational requirements.

The Spitfire remains one of the most recognisable aircraft in aviation history, and organisers say the anniversary flights aim to celebrate its enduring legacy while bringing the experience of seeing it in flight to communities across the country.
