Wings Over Windermere Returns As Historic Waterbird Takes To The Skies.
A spectacular aviation event is set to return to Windermere this week, with the historic Waterbird replica seaplane preparing to take to the skies over the lake.
Wings Over Windermere 2026 will take place on Friday, September 4 and Saturday, September 5, with flying demonstrations beginning from 6.45pm on both evenings. The replica Waterbird is a remarkable recreation of the original aircraft commissioned by Captain Edward Wakefield from A. V. Roe and Company in 1911. The original aircraft was converted from a landplane into a seaplane at Windermere and went on to make aviation history.
Waterbird is described as the only airworthy replica seaplane of its era anywhere in the world. The aircraft faithfully recreates the original design, apart from its modern engine and propeller. Spectators will also be able to watch the Aviat Husky, a more modern seaplane which will demonstrate the continuing legacy of Waterbird and the development of seaplane technology.
The official viewing area will be located on the lawns at Low Wood Bay Resort, providing spectators with views across Windermere towards the Langdale Pikes. There is no entry fee, while free parking will be available at the Woodland Car Park between 5.30pm and 9pm.
The Waterbird demonstrations are expected to be short but spectacular. The aircraft will take off from the lake, fly at a low altitude along the water and then land back on Windermere. Organisers have stressed that the display is a historic flying demonstration rather than an aerobatic airshow.
This year's Waterbird pilot will be Lieutenant Commander Chris Gotke AFC, a Royal Navy pilot who is responsible for fixed wing aviation at the Empire Test Pilots’ School at Boscombe Down. The event also highlights Windermere's important place in the history of aviation. On November 25, 1911, the original Waterbird became the first aeroplane outside France and the United States to successfully take off from and land on water.
Following each evening's display, visitors will have the opportunity to attend a Meet The Team session at the Low Wood Bay Resort Conference Centre, where pilots and members of the event team will be available. Organisers have warned that the flights remain weather dependent. Significant or unsuitable winds could prevent the aircraft from operating safely, meaning demonstrations may have to be delayed or cancelled. Visitors are advised to check the official Waterbird updates before travelling.
