Lake District Stream Restored to Natural Wetland After 300 Years
A historic waterway in the Lake District has been restored after being straightened in the 18th century to drain surrounding farmland.
The National Trust, working with a local tenant farmer, reshaped Blelham Beck near Wray Castle, creating natural bends, shallow pools and wetland habitats.
The project is expected to benefit wildlife, including dragonflies, birds, salmon and sea trout, while improving water storage during heavy rainfall and dry periods.
The restoration also provides safer crossing points for livestock and helps strengthen the landscape against climate change.
