United Utilities Reports 14 Percent Drop in Sewage Spills Across Cumbria

27 Mar 2026 United Utilities Reports 14 Percent Drop in Sewage Spills Across Cumbria

United Utilities has reported a 14 percent reduction in sewage spills across Cumbria, marking a notable improvement in efforts to reduce water pollution in the region.

The water company said the decrease comes as part of ongoing work to upgrade infrastructure and better manage storm overflows. Officials highlighted investment in wastewater systems and monitoring technology as key factors behind the improvement.

Despite the reduction, environmental concerns remain, with campaigners and regulators continuing to call for further action. Across England, sewage discharges are still happening at significant levels, even though overall figures have declined in recent years.

United Utilities also pointed to weather conditions as a contributing factor, with drier periods helping to limit the number of overflow incidents. However, critics argue that long-term solutions require sustained investment and stricter controls rather than relying on favourable weather.

The company has committed to further improvements, including upgrading hundreds of storm overflow sites and reducing spill durations in the coming years.

While the reported drop offers some positive progress, pressure remains on water companies to significantly cut pollution levels and protect Cumbria’s rivers and lakes for the future.
