Outrage After Heavy Tree Cutting in Cockermouth

14 May 2026 Outrage After Heavy Tree Cutting in Cockermouth

Outrage has erupted in Cockermouth after several lime trees along Main Street were heavily cut back in work carried out by Cumberland Council.

The trees were recently pillared, a process used to manage growth, but local residents and conservation representatives say the extent and timing of the work has caused serious concern.

Cockermouth and District Civic Trust has raised questions over whether the correct permissions were obtained, arguing that any tree work in the town’s conservation area should be properly notified and approved in advance.

The trust also suggested that restrictions may have been needed due to the bird nesting season, which runs from March to the end of July, and warned that inappropriate timing could harm wildlife.

Local conservation adviser Darren Ward criticised the decision, describing the cutting as “irresponsible” and saying it had a negative impact on the appearance of Main Street, a key historic feature of the town.

He added that while lime trees are traditionally pollarded to maintain their shape, such work must be carefully timed and managed, particularly within protected conservation areas.

The Main Street trees have long been part of Cockermouth’s distinctive streetscape, contributing to the town’s historic character and visual identity.

The Civic Trust says it intends to challenge the decision and seek clarification over whether proper procedures were followed before the work was carried out.

Cumberland Council has been approached for comment.
